Dirty water hides an energy treasure to be uncovered. The manager of a sewage plant close to Braunschweig is working on an exciting pilot project with DECHEMA-Forschungsinstitut: With the help of microbial fuel cells the sewage plant is to be used as an energy buffer.

IFAT, the world’s leading trade fair for water, sewage, waste, and raw materials management, takes place every two years in Munich. As already in 2016, the Electrochemistry research group was present this year with their own booth in the innovation sector at the centre of the fair.

Project "Improved Photocatalysts for selective NOx degradation" is research highlight of the IGF 2017
Under the headline “Innovative building materials clean the air – nitrogen oxide degradation by photocatalysis" (Innovative Baustoffe reinigen die Luft – Stickoxidabbau durch Photokatalyse) one of the "Chemical Technology" group's research projects has been chosen as highlight project of the industrial collective research (iGF) and is the topic of the new AiF project flyer.
New BMBF project to develop biotechnological production processes for chiral substances
Chiral substances play an important role in the production of fine chemicals, especially pharmaceuticals. The project investigates the development of possibilities for biotechnological synthesis of chemicals from methanol. Using this biomass conversion product as basis of all developments is also an important contribution to the biologisation of chemistry.
Photocatalysis team presents current research activities at SP6 Conference
The 6th International conference on Semiconductor Photochemistry SP6 took place on 11th to 14th September 2017 in Oldenburg (Germany). The event was supported by Dr. Jonathan Bloh, head of the Chemical Technology research group at DFI, who acted as co-chair.
Around 50 international junior scientists met with representatives of academia and industry
Together with VAAM, DECHEMA-Forschungsinstitut (DFI) organised this year its fourth international Summer School "Biotransformations 2017" in Hannover. Between 16 and 19 July the participants had the opportunity to discuss with high-ranking experts from industry and science about topics such as protein discovery 2.0, production host development, downstream processing, and many more. PhD students from DFI also attended the conference.
Research project AROMAplus receives 4.4 million Euro LOEWE funding
Together with the project partners Hochschule Geisenheim University (leading) and Justus Liebig University Gießen, DECHEMA-Forschungsinstitut will receive a LOEWE funding of 4,395,648 Euro for the research project “AROMAplus – from plant resources to microbial production – aroma and functional ingredients from vine and fruit”.

DECHEMA-Forschungsinstitut under new administration
On 1st March 2017 DECHEMA-Forschungsinstitut in Frankfurt appointed its new administration. Prof. Dr. Jens Schrader is the new head of the foundation. His position also includes the head of the Institute's administrative committee. Further members are Associate Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfram Fürbeth, head of the Corrosion group, and Associate Prof. Dr.-Ing. Mathias Galetz, head of the High Temperature Materials group.
MIKE makes biogas plants more efficient: New BMBF Project launched about the material use of CO2
Higher biogas yield, no complex CO2 separation, and excess electricity is used reasonably: All of this is the goal of MIKE, the BMBF project "Methanation of CO2 from biogas by microbial electrosynthesis", which was launched on 1 September 2016.
