With the international standards IEC 61508 and IEC 61511, probabilism and determinism gain strong importance in process technology and process control technology. Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) which are categorised with quantitative requirements concerning dangerous failure (PFD, lambda DU, λDU) are linked to the respective risk which has to be covered.

Due to the different applications, it is difficult to determine credible failure rates for field devices (sensors, actuators) in chemical industry plants.

SIS malfunction registration and SIS malfunction analysis, which are encompassed by NAMUR, assist in doing so. Example calculations can be found in the VDI/VDE guideline 2180 if devices of prior use are installed. Typicals for the configuration of a safety instrumented system (SIS) and a standard equipment list complete the picture.

Using these tools makes a computational SIL verification easy. This seminar shows how to put all that into practice by means of a pilot plant, application examples and group work.

The fundamentals of this subject are issue of the training course Functional safety – plant safety and process control technology (PCT), fundamentals (Funktionale Sicherheit – Anlagensicherheit und Prozessleittechnik (PLT), Grundlagen).

In the context of the SIL day (Der SIL-Tag) the latest topics in the field of functional safety – plant safety and process control technology (PCT) will be discussed.
