Synthesis, characterisation and application of novel stationary phases for potential-controlled chromatography

Within the scope of this project new (bio-) electrochemical methods for the purification of products from fermentation broth should be developed by the collaboration between biotechnologists, engineers and (electro-) chemists in complementary research centers. Preliminary work had shown the applicability of potential-controlled chromatography (PCC) with non-modified glassy carbon spheres. To compete with classic methods, additional conductive stationary phases for the PCC should be synthesized, characterized and evaluated using the production of succinic and lactic acid as model substances. To improve the separation efficiency and capacity of this new development, conductive matrices will be combined with other conductive (derivatized) materials.

Together with the project partners from TU Munich and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) the processes of the potential-controlled adsorption and desorption from the molecular level to entire chromatography columns must be examined and described by a suitable model concept to gain a deeper understanding and to achieve an effective optimization.
