Electrobiotechnology is based on the combination of biotechnological and electrochemical process steps and uses the advantages of both techniques. While the major advantages of biotechnology are the production of complex molecules and the specific production of very pure products (high stereo and regioselectivity), electrochemical processes often exhibit very high energy and atomic efficiencies. During the development of enzymatic and microbial electrosyntheses new biocatalysts (enzymes and electroactive microorganisms) are developed and scalable reactor concepts are evaluated. The two techniques Electrofermentation and Secondary Microbial Electrosynthesis can already be used industrially.
