Processing of bioproducts contributes significantly to the economic efficiency of the overall process. White biotechnology has different requirements with regard to costs and product purity than downstream processing (DSP) of biotechnologically produced pharmaceutical products. The many challenges of DSP have already been addressed by integrated process development and corresponding design of the biocatalysts and the bioprocess. Special focus topics at DFI in the field of white biotechnology include membrane processes (pervaporation), adsorption, distillation and in-situ product separation (ISPR).
