On 9 October 2023, Dr Till König successfully defended his PhD Thesis with the title “Development and analysis of CVD oxidation protection coatings for SiC-based fibre compound ceramics”.
His work was done in collaboration with MTU Aero-Engines. It was focused on SiC-based fibre compound ceramics. These offer the potential of increasing the efficiency of turbine engines, since they enable a higher combustion temperature in comparison to state-of-the-art materials, and they have a higher weight-specific strength. One of the main challenges for the application of SiC/SiC fibre compound ceramics is their thermochemical stability in combustion atmospheres. This is where Dr König’s work comes in. He developed novel coatings with enhanced oxidation properties especially for high contents of water vapour in the combustion atmosphere, as expected in turbines of the future.
