By using electrobiotechnological processes electrical energy can be generated with a more efficient use of resources as well as basic chemicals can be produced in a more sustainable way. Suitable for this purpose are electroactive organisms that are capable of using an electrode as terminal electron acceptor or receiving electrons from the electrode vice versa. A bottle neck in this process is the electron transfer rate across the electroactive biofilm. One possible way of improvement is the generation of artificial biofilms with facilitated interaction between biofilm and electrode. Therefore surface characteristics of planar and spherical electrodes are modified to improve bacterial adhesion. Artificial biofilms with enhanced electron transfer rates are produced using the layer-by-layer technique. Additionally the impact of quorum sensing on biofilm formation is investigated. Biofilm formation properties are analysed using CLSM and impedance spectroscopy.
