Aims

Clay and Clay minerals are used to seal landfills of urban waste against leaching of liquid contaminations and to avoid discharge of contaminations. The structure of clay and clay minerals naturally even out changes in temperature or pressure. The clay layer are able to transport and also accumulate penetrated liquids.
Aim of the work is the development of a measuring method for on line monitoring of landfills with clay and clay mineral sealings, based on an electrochemical ac method with a continuing monitoring of the physical, chemical and electrochemical processes in the clay layer. This monitoring is necessary to get timely and locally resolved information about the penetration and transport of liquid contaminations in and through the clay layer to send this information to a controll unit and to prevent breakthrough of sealings.

Working Plan

Development of a laboratory measuring method including registration and interpretation of the measured data. Planning and development of a field measuring method.
