The aim of this research project is to fulfil requirements for a potential application of friction stir welding processes to join thin metallic plates or slices of different materials. A comprehensive mechanism and durability oriented corrosion and fatigue investigation is vital for a reliable application of friction stir welded light composite materials in their various application fields. Based on achieved experimental results, a criterion and failure catalogue will be developed and provided for a future FSW user. This will allow the future FSW user a reliable and secure application of friction stir welded composites under corrosive and cyclic loads.
The results of process optimisation and systematic analysis of the coherences between microstructure and damage properties of the composite materials will assist small and medium-sized enterprises to fabricate very high quality FSW joints. These can also be used for example, in the automotive industry for components under highly corrosive and cyclically stressed conditions. Hereby, markets will be opened up for the suppliers of the aviation and aerospace industries as well as railway branches, which often belong to small and medium-sized enterprises. Furthermore, this project will contribute to decrease the already existing development deficiency of German small and medium-sized enterprises in the field of FSW, in comparison to the Japanese and American enterprises.
Implementation of the results will be done through direct transfer of information and knowledge to the companies of the project steering committee, as well as through information and consultation work shops for regional small and medium-sized enterprises. Scientific talks, presentations at conferences and international congresses, publications in scientific reviews, especially of the DVS, and transfer of the results to the academic curriculum and further education will also be made as well as the compilation of a welding recommendation for inclusion in new media (internet).
