Prominent examples for heme proteins are hemoglobin and myoglobin which both bind molecular oxygen due to their prosthetic heme group. Further heme containing proteins are peroxidases and catalases which degrade hydrogen peroxide, and several cytochromes which are involved in electron transport, energy generation and metabolic reactions. Due to their metabolic versatility heme proteins are of main interest for biocatalytic and sensory applications. In this project the directed immobilization of heme proteins on a conductive polymer support will be investigated generating a direct electrochemical communication between the electrode and the protein. This will be achieved by connecting an artificial heme group directly to the polymer via spacer molecules. The heme of the protein will be extracted and the heme deficient apoprotein will be refolded around the artificial heme-polymer construct to form a functional holoprotein which is directly wired to the electrode.back
