The aim of this research project is to develop a new biotechnological process that is both environmentally friendly and economically viable for the synthesis and obtaining very pure of natural monoterpenic acids. On account of their antimicrobial and antifungal properties, the target compunds R-(+)-perillic acid, have a great potential for application as preservatives in cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. The gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas putida is able to metabolize limonene from perillic alcohol, perillic aldehyde, then in perillic acid by successive oxydations. This monoterpenic acid is accumulated as high product.

The objective of the planned project covers, among other things the development of a suitable in situ product separation procedure as well as medium optimization using a genetic algorithm.
